Landscape painting has been an integral part of my art practice for many years. My interpretation of the landscape has evolved over time to reflect the contemporary view of art as not merely an interpretation of the subject, but as the expression of culture and the artist’s interaction with contemporary values. The more technological our lives become, the more I am drawn back to the natural world. Technology is an excellent tool but in my own practice and in my teaching, I limit its use and prefer the transformative experience of becoming lost in the exploration of my subject. The tactile experience of making art with paint, paper and bristle brushes can be a grounding experience, bringing me back to a place within, from the visual and auditory noise of the digital age. Currently I am exploring the forms and textures of large trees within the landscape in large format oil paintings. In these paintings I am focusing on the forms in a somewhat abstract fashion without completely losing sight of them as trees. My interest is in the interplay of light and shadow on the bark and leaves and how it relates to the negative spaces created by the branches. The juxtaposition of hard and soft forms becomes an opportunity to interpret them as color and mass rather than leaves bark and sky.
